We will study less for the Master's degrees. Universities have no money for student costs

Leading universities in the country will cut their Master's programmes to two semesters since they have no money for the maintenance of students, showed an inspection conducted by Klassa. This will happen because the state will not pay for the third semester of Master's programmes and universities will be forced to cut down the training for this educational degree. "All Master's degree programmes will be packed in two semesters,“ told Klassa Professor Ivan Ilchev, Rector of Sofia University “St.Kliment Orhridski”. Currently, the largest part of Master's degree programmes take three semesters.

Professor Ilchev said that, without a warning, in December, universities were informed that the state will pay only for two semesters of the training. "We will introduce a restriction on the small Master's programmes as well. Programmes attended by a small number of students will take place only if the teachers are willing to work without being paid," said Ilchev.

Regarding the subsidy, he announced that, currently, the university receives an amount of less than BGN 2 mln per month, while the expenditures for salaries and fees stand at BGN 2.6 mln per month.

The Rector added that a debate is being held at the university and a new method for internal budgeting will be adopted, whereby faculties will be assigned more responsibilities. Reducing the number of teachers who work for fees is one of the measures which the university has taken.

"We have cut all costs that could be cut. So far, we do not plan further wage reductions," said Ilchev.

Several days ago, Klassa learned that the university had problems with the cleaners as well and high-school teachers had to clean their offices themselves. The Rector acknowledged that the university had problems with the company in charge of the cleaning. "I explained to the Minister that we owe large amounts to this company, accumulated over last year, and they refuse to clean," said Ilchev. He assured, however, that the problem is being tackled and, now, there are cleaners in the university.
