Electricity exports to Turkey to start on May 3

Georgi Velev

The exports of electricity to Turkey can begin after May 3, at the earliest, announced officials from the Electricity System Operator (ESO). Until then, the tests for switching the Turkish electricity system to the pan European ENTSO-E are expected to continue. The Turkish network will be switched to the European system via two power lines- one to Bulgaria and one to Greece. Initially, the exports of electricity are expected to start by the end of March. The National Electricity Company (NEK) is planning to receive substantial revenue from the energy supply to the Turkish market. The tests of the trade exchange of electricity will continue at least another 11 months, added ESO officials.

“Nearly 15% of the tested electric metres in the country have been manipulated,” said yesterday in Parliament Minister of Economy, Energy and Tourism Traicho Traikov. He explained that the inspections had covered some 854 electric metres and the offenders were fined by the maximum electricity capacity for the last three months.

“Bulgarian citizens who have returned from Japan, can test themselves for free in order to be establish whether they have been exposed to higher levels of radiation,” said Traikov after visiting the Nuclear Regulatory Agency yesterday. The exams can be carried out in the Kozloduy NPP or at the National Centre of Radiobiology and Radiation Protection. Traikov was clear that the radiation background in the country has not changed and everything, in terms of radiation, is within permissible levels.
