Prime Minister Borissov: Early elections are possible

“Early parliamentary elections in the autumn are not impossible,” said Prime Minister Boyko Borissov in a telephone interview for bTV television channel yesterday but, at the same time, he denied that work has been carried out aimed at provoking such a scenario. Borissov condemned the actions of the Ataka party in front of the mosque in Sofia. In response to the threat of Volen Siderov that Ataka will continue to be the most serious opposition to GERB (Citizens for European Development of Bulgaria), Borissov said: " I won the elections five times in spite of such threats." The Prime Minister said that he would not form a government without the support of the Blue Coalition, OLJ (Order, Law and Justice) and the Ataka party.

"Mr. Borissov cannot frighten us with early elections," told Klassa BSP leader Sergei Stanishev. According to him, the socialists will get a much better result and GERB – a much worse one, compared to the outcome of the last elections. Stanishev assumed that it came down to a media trick of Borissov and reminded that the left-wing parties had demanded the resignation of the Government for a long time.

Co-Chair of the Blue Coalition Ivan Kostov said it was irresponsible on the part of GERB to show unwillingness to complete its mandate. “Early elections will be a huge disaster for GERB and Boyko Borissov himself,” predicted Kostov.

“I do not know how serious this likelihood of early elections is,” commented for Klassa MP from MRF (Movement for Rights and Freedoms) Chetin Kazak. According to him, his party is always ready to participate in elections.

“If GERB leaders do not need our support, we cannot offer it by force,” said Volen Siderov, leader of the Ataka party. He believes that early elections would lead to destabilisation of the country.

“OLJ welcomes the idea of early parliamentary elections,” stated the declaration of the party. OLJ leaders insisted that Borissov support their suggestion for elections for the Grand National Assembly and a new Constitution.
