Bulgaria manages to improve energy saving faster than expected

“Bulgaria has exceeded its targets for energy savings. In the period from 2008 to 2010, it improved its energy efficiency by about 4.5%,” stated yesterday Kolio Kolev, Executive Director of the Energy Efficiency Agency (EEA) at the signing of a voluntary agreement on energy savings improvement with the E.ON company. He explained that an energy efficiency improvement of 3% had been planned initially. “By 2016, the improvement must reach 9%, compared to the period 2001-2005,” Kolev said.

“We are currently drafting a report on Bulgaria's progress in improving energy efficiency in companies and in the administration. All persons obliged by law have already submitted their data,” said Kolev. The EU is expected to prepare its own report on the progress of the country on this issue by the end of the year.

At present, the EEA is cooperating with the German E.ON in order to achieve faster progress in energy efficiency in Bulgaria. Similar documents for cooperation were already signed with Czech CEZ and Austrian EVN, which are also owners of the electricity grid in the country. Under the voluntary agreement, the two parties will establish a joint working group which will analyse and propose solutions to problems arising during the operation of E.ON Bulgaria Sales Company. The accelerated introduction of methodologies for assessment of the effect of the implemented energy saving measures will be the main priority of both parties.
