Plevneliev: Bulgaria will be the engine of European integration

Bulgaria will be the engine of the next phase of European integration. Now, all EU member-states need to unite. We can only succeed together; no one stands a chance alone, stated yesterday the newly-elected President Rosen Plevneliev in his speech to the participants in the public discussion "Two years After Lisbon – What is the EU's Direction?". The forum was held in Parliament under the auspices of Tsetska Tsacheva.

Rosen Plevneliev assured that, in the future, our country will be one of the most supportive and most responsible EU member-states. The future Head of State pointed out that, by mid-2012, Bulgaria will have drafted its 2020 agenda and guaranteed that the major parties will focus jointly on the most important priorities and will come at responsible decisions at the national level.

Plevneliev pointed out that, as a symbol of fiscal discipline and responsible decisions, Bulgarian governments, including the last Cabinet, acted in very difficult times as crisis managers in order to make our country sustainable during the recent economic crisis.
The Deputy Chairman of Parliament, Georgi Pirinski, indicated in his statement that, at present, Europe finds itself at a historic crossroads and defended the thesis that the answer to the current problems lies in strengthening the social role of the EU.

The economic and debt crisis in the Euroarea is mostly a political crisis, a crisis of confidence. This position was defended by MEP Elmar Brok and the President of the Robert Schuman Foundation Jean-Dominique Giuliani.

According to Giuliani, we should not be talking of a Europe at one or two speeds since we all "we need an EU developing at high speed."

The Foreign Minister Mladenov asked rhetorically: "Do we want the EU Parliament to house only the leaders of rich countries, while Bulgarians are excluded?," and answered in the negative. Mladenov indicated that the crisis resulted from non-compliance with established rules rather than the absence of such rules, and noted that Germany and France were the first countries to breach the financial stability rules. According to him, Bulgaria loses when there is less of the EU and gains when there is more of it. Mladenov was optimistic that the crisis will bring about a new stage in European integration.
