Bulgarian firewood exported to Greece in huge quantities

Within just a week, the prices of firewood doubled because Bulgarian timber is being exported to Greece in huge quantities. One of the reasons for the considerable exports to our southern neighbour is the fact that people there are stockpiling firewood for the winter because of the high excise duty on the already expensive diesel oil and naphtha – the fuels commonly used for heating. For instance, naphtha for heating costs more than BGN 3/litre. Electricity is twice more expensive than in Bulgaria. The Government in Athens imposed these unpopular measures on the insistence of Western creditors. That is why Greeks prefer to buy Bulgarian firewood and middlemen prefer to sell firewood from Bulgaria to Greek households rather than trade it in our country at considerably lower prices. In the warehouses in the town of Seres, located 40 km from the Bulgarian border, prices are in the range of €75 to €95 per cu m, a team of bTV revealed. According to traders, the higher fuel prices become in Greece, the more demanded Bulgarian firewood will be. However, they believe the boom in the supply of Bulgarian firewood has not come yet. They expect it in September.

According to foresters from the Greek town of Seres, Bulgarian dealers tempted by the desire to make a quick profit have opened there warehouses for firewood. The price of firewood in Greece is between €100 and €120 per tonne, twice more than in our country. bTV found out that in the town of Ihtiman, from where the firewood leaves for Greece, it sells at BGN 50/cu m. If sold on the market in Seres, the dealer’s profit will be 100%.
