Plevneliev nominates Velchev for a constitutional judge

Rossen Plevneliev nominated Chief Prosecutor Boris Velchev for a member of the Constitutional Court. A check of klassa.bg showed that, since Plevneliev's mandate started, two similar nominations have been announced as a subject for public discussion, so that the President can ultimately make his own decision.

According to the official announcement, "Velchev's academic excellence and legal experience, gained in various positions, have motivated the President to nominate him for a judge at the Constitutional Court." The President is confident that Velchev "possesses the professional and moral qualities which will allow him to continue working for the establishment of Bulgaria as a modern constitutional state."

The reasons for the nomination are also given in a curriculum vitae. The Chief Prosecutor has been an Associate Professor since 1997 and, since 2012, he has been a Professor of Criminal Law. Velchev is also Head of the Department of Penal Law at the St. Cyril and St. Methodius University of Veliko Turnovo, and a Professor of Penal and International Penal Law. He is a member of the Board of the National Institute of Justice.

In the period 2002 - 2005, Boris Velchev was a juristic counsel to the President and Chairman of the Legislative Council of the Head of State and, since 2006, he has been Chief Prosecutor and a member by right of the Supreme Judicial Council.

The National Assembly also has to make a choice of two new constitutional judges by the end of the month.
