NCIOM: 62.5% of Bulgarians in favour of nuclear energy development

Some 62.5% of Bulgarians say they will vote in favour of nuclear energy development in the upcoming referendum, with the other 37.5% deciding to vote against, according to results from a November nationwide representative opinion poll by the National Centre for Public Opinion Research (NCIOM). In April, when the phrasing of the question referred specifically to the Belene NPP, 57% of voters were in favour and 43% – against.

Only 7% of the participants in the November NCIOM poll said that they are well-informed where nuclear energy is concerned and stated that they actively search information on the subject. Some 38% of the respondents described their understanding of nuclear energy matters as average and based on passing relevant information. This group is made up mostly of people with higher education or representing upper or middle-class households. Some 36% of the people polled said they have poor knowledge of nuclear energy issues. These are predominantly young people under the age of 29, people with high school education or from low-income families.

Some 19% of the respondents, mostly poor people, village residents and ethnic Roma said they have absolutely no understanding of nuclear energy issues.

The opinion poll was carried out between November 1 and 7, 2012. The nationwide representative research included 1,000 people in 86 settlements.
