Bulgarian firefighters return from Mount Athos

Bulgarian firemen, who left on August 11 to fight the fire in Mount Athos, returned to Bulgaria on Wednesday night, the Ministry of Interior informed. The fire raged for days in the almost inaccessible mountainous region on the Athos peninsula in Greece.

Two Bulgarian fire-fighting teams had the task of protecting the Zograf Monastery where Bulgarian monks live. Immediately after arriving in Greece, the firemen joined actively the fire-fighting efforts in the southern part of the peninsula and near the Zograf Monastery, the Ministry of Interior informed.

“Finally, the fire was put out by God himself,” one of the Bulgarian firemen told the media. A torrential rain completely extinguished the fire on the Athos peninsula two days ago.

Bulgarian firefighters inspected the Zograf Monastery on Tuesday. They inspected the power grid and fire-extinguishers but did not find any gross negligence, according to the ministry.
