Shallow Danube blocks 40 ships near Svishtov

The low level of the Danube river blocked over 40 ships near the town of Svishtov, bTV informed. As many as 40 ships were blocked in the shallow waters near Svishtov. The Executive Agency for Exploration and Maintenance of the Danube River (EAEMDR) warns that shipping may stop.

A ship can transport simultaneously up to 6 crewless vessels loaded with coal, ore, sand or machine parts along the Danube river. If there is no rainfall in Central Europe in the coming weeks, shipping may be completely halted. The losses suffered by navigators will amount to millions, bTV informed.

At present, one ship can transport one vessel at the most near the Belene island. The Bulgarian Vit ship is the only machine navigating ships and showing them where they can pass freely. The Bulgarian crew is charged with the task of mapping out the shallows along a 270-km stretch of the river. The losses caused by the shallow waters of the Danube river for four months last year exceeded BGN 3 mln, if we do not count damages due to the shipping blocked by the ice-breaker in the winter.
