Bulgaria, Romania’s Schengen accession part of refugee crisis’ solution

“Being a country on the front line of the refugee flows Bulgaria has great need of a common migration policy of the EU, as well as to be part of the Schengen area,” Bulgarian Deputy Prime Minister for European Policies Coordination and Institutional Affairs Meglena Kuneva said speaking with journalists commenting on yesterday’s statement of European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker, the press office of the Bulgarian Government announced.

Ms Kuneva was explicit that to some great extent the measures outlined by Mr Juncker coincided with the position of the Bulgarian government – both Bulgaria and the EU insisted on revision of the Dublin Regulation, strengthening of Frontex and security at the external borders, enhancing the capacity of the migration services.

Speaking of the proposed quotas the Deputy Prime Minister said that our country defended the principle of solidarity but was also explicit that the concrete figures would be analysed and evaluated in terms of whether they were fair towards the different criteria – GDP, unemployment rate, migrants rate and others.

“Part of refugee problem’s solution in Europe is for Bulgaria and Romania to become members of the Schengen Area,” Meglena Kuneva remarked.
