Bulgaria parliament to adopt rules on constitutional judge election

Bulgarian parliament is to hold a regular sitting on Friday.

According to MP’s agenda, the Bulgarian lawmakers are expected to adopt the procedure rules for election of a judge at the Constitutional Court with the quota of the National Assembly. The nominations are raised by the MPs and parliamentary groups in a written form and filed to National Assembly’s administration in a five-day deadline after the election rules and procedures are adopted.

Yesterday, Bulgarian mandate-holder Citizens for European Development of Bulgaria (CEDB) announced it would nominate Konstantin Penchev, former Ombudsman of Bulgaria, for constitutional judge with the quota of the National Assembly. “We believe that this is a well-merited person. The entire parliamentary group backs his nomination. We will file the proposal when the procedure is started,” said Tsvetan Tsvetanov, Chairperson of the parliamentary group of the CEDB.

He commented further that there was only one nomination discussed – that of Mr Penchev, who himself agreed to the proposal. Tsvetan Tsvetanov added that the nomination had been also agreed with Prime Minister Boyko Borisov.
