A quarter of Bulgarians prefer solitary life

Nearly 26 percent of Bulgarians after the age of 20 prefer to live alone, while 54 percent live in matrimonial cohabitance. Widows and widowers are 12 percent of the Bulgarians while some 7 percent are live as divorced, according to Eurostat.

Bulgaria and Slovenia register the lowest number of marriages in the EU – only 3 marriages per 1000 persons.

The largest number of couples living together out of wedlock is registered in Sweden – 18 percent. According to this index Bulgaria stands side by side countries like Austria, Hungary, Latvia and Spain, where around 8 percent of the couples prefer living together without marriage.

Women in Romania, Poland and Bulgaria marry comparatively earlier than in other EU countries – around the age of 26.
