Bulgaria govt adopts road infrastructure development strategy until 2022
Bulgarian Council of Ministers adopted a Strategy on development of the road infrastructure and Mid-term operational programme for its implementation until 2022 at its regular sitting on Wednesday, the press office of the Bulgarian cabinet announced.
The strategy envisages the construction of new 635 km of motorways and more than 17,000 km of repaired roads of I, II and III class by 2022.
The priorities outlined by the government provided in the strategic document include the finalisation of Hemus, Struma, Maritsa, Cherno More and Kalotina motorways.
Apart from a list with priority projects, financial plan and transport infrastructure development programmes the Strategy also provides an analysis on the state of the republican and municipal road network, the total length, the wear and tear state, the state of the road facilities, statistics and prognoses about the traffic and movement intensity.
It also outlines the needed legal amendments that will meet the increased number of motor vehicles, their load, loading capacity, as well as the increased transit traffic after Bulgaria’s accession in the EU.
The major goals of the strategy include development of stable road infrastructure; its integration to the European transport system; high safety and efficient management of the road sector.
The document is of key importance for the road infrastructure development in Bulgaria in the current programme period of the EU, speeding up the regional cohesion, sustainable development of the economy and improvement of the environment.
The programme also represents a platform for coordination and concentration of resources, including international financial agreements. This way Bulgaria will achieve maximum effect of the money invested in the maintenance, rehabilitation and development of the roads in Bulgaria.
