Bulgaria MEP to launch national campaign against violence against women
Maria Gabriel, MEP with the Citizens for European Development of Bulgaria (CEDB)/European People’s Party (EPP) and Deputy Chair of the EPP Group, is to start a number of conferences on the issue of violence against women, which will be held in the frames of a year in various towns and cities throughout Bulgaria, the CEDB press centre announced.
The initiative is organised in partnership with Bulgaria’s Commission for Protection against Discrimination, the European Women's Lobby, the Hanns Seidel Foundation, the Society for Justice Foundation, the Animus Association Foundation, and the Bulgarian Gender Research Foundation (BGRF).
The national campaign enjoys support at the highest European level in the face of EU Anti-Trafficking Coordinator Myria Vassiliadou and European Commissioner for Justice, Consumers and Gender Equality Vera Jourova.
The initiative is an expression of the idea of Maria Gabriel and the CEDB Women structure for a large-scale campaign against violence against women to the aim of raising the public’s sensitivity to and awareness of the grave problem. They also want bigger commitment on the part of responsible institutions.
The campaign will be also conducted in the context of the written declaration through which the Deputy Chair of the EPP Group and her colleagues at the European Parliament (EP) called on the European Commission (EC) to declare 2016 a European Year on Combating Violence against Women.
The campaign is to start on Saturday, September 19, at 10:00 a.m. in the coastal city of Burgas.
