I had 11 statements of offence issued last year for uttering sentences in mother tongue: Bulgaria’s MRF chair

“I had 11 statements of offence issued last year […] for allowing myself to utter two sentences in a mother tongue at meetings at which I spoke Bulgarian,” said Lyutvi Mestan, leader of the Movement for Rights and Freedoms (MRF), speaking at the annual Leaders Meeting of the Liberal South East European Network (LIBSEEN) in the Hilton Hotel in the capital Sofia.

“This Constitution makes it possible for the MRF chair to be fined in European Bulgaria for speaking in a mother tongue, which is exercising a natural right. We saw this side of the Constitution back in 1991. For it did not explicitly reflect our rights and did not defend them, the MRF could not sign it,” Mestan noted.

He asked why as liberalism defended the rights of individuals and their identity no representatives of Albanian parties were attending Saturday’s forum.
