Refugee crisis in Europe – commentaries in Bulgaria (ROUNDUP)

Refugee crisis in Europe is still one of the front-burner issues for discussion in Bulgaria. Here is what some experts and officials said on the topic on Sunday.

“Problems deriving from the uncontrolled migrant flow are in the first place a challenge at the security and then a humanitarian issue,” said Boyko Noev, former minister of defence, speaking in an interview with FOCUS News Agency.
“I have been commenting on the need to take all kind of actions to protect the border, including with the support of the army, for more than a year. This is what all countries along the migration route are doing. Thank God, Bulgarian Prime Minister Boyko Borisov finally realised the complexity of the situation,” Mr Noev remarked.
“I hope that soon everyone will realise that the problems deriving from the uncontrolled migrant flow through the borders of Bulgaria, and of the EU, are in the first place a challenge at the security and then a humanitarian crisis,” the expert commented further.
In his words, Bulgaria is most vulnerable in the EU due to the low living standard and biggest population in one way or another connected with the Islamic religion and customs.
“I am concerned that some Bulgarian politicians still believe that burring one’s head into the ground will solve the problems,” Boyko Noev remarked.

“Bulgaria should not allow being turned into a refugee corridor like Macedonia and Serbia,” said Professor Vihren Buzov, expert in security crises, speaking for Radio FOCUS.
In his words, it will be a problem if Turkey pushed the refugee flows towards Bulgaria.
“That is why the government constructed defence facilities and stepped-up the security,” he remarked.
He commented that the countries in Central Europe, such as Croatia and Slovenia, closed their borders, which would force the refugees to use alternative routes to Germany through Bulgaria and Romania.
“The USA is not only part of the refugee issue, it is its core,” said Professor Vihren Buzov.
He added that it was paradoxical that the USA was trying to lecture Europe to accept more refugees.
According to him, the problem looms larger because of the fact that the EU cannot form a common policy that will soften the effect of this process.
“In the end, the European solidarity, even the social systems of the rich European countries, are questioned because of the invasion of these refugees in Germany, as well as in France, will lead to social system collapse, cut in salaries, and etc.,” Professor Buzov remarked.
In his words, countries like the USA push Germany and France to this hesitant policy.

“Security of Europe includes tackling the refugee crisis,” said Deputy Prime Minister for European Policies Coordination and Institutional Affairs Meglena Kuneva speaking for the Bulgarian National Radio (BNR).
“The so-called hot points are an important element. These are centres in which authorities ascertain whether a person applying for refugee status has grounds for it. In order to have such hot points in the countries facing higher refugee flow, they have to require it.
Hungary, for instance, refused and does not require aid from the EU,” Ms Kuneva reported.
She added that the so-called hot points were managed by FRONTEX, the EU border service, as well as by officers with Europol and the local authorities
