Bulgaria President: United Europe needs new ideas
“The European Union (EU) needs new doze of trust, which to unite the will of the European countries to overcome the most serious series of crises over the past years.” This is what President of the Republic of Bulgaria Rosen Plevneliev called for at the 11th meeting of the Heads of State of the Arraiolos group held at the Wartburg Castle in the city of Erfurt, Germany, the press centre of the President’s Office announced.
The Arraiolos meeting is attended by the Heads of State of Austria, Germany, Estonia, Italy, Latvia, Malta, Poland, Portugal, Slovenia, and Finland.
The Bulgarian Head of State stressed that the meeting of the European presidents was held at a moment that was decisive for the EU.
“United Europe needs ideas that will push it forwards. The EU finds itself not only in a crisis of identity but also in a crisis of values. When we close our borders to people seeking asylum from the severest war of the past years, when we shift the responsibility to one another, when we do not observe the set rules and when several member states do not even register the refugees, we should realise that there is a need for the EU to take measures,” the President remarked.
In his words, the topic of the first session of the forum – Enhancing Cohesion in Europe, is a clear signal that the European leaders realise the need of closer cooperation and to confirm the major principles of the EU.
In Rosen Plevneliev’s words, the crisis in Ukraine, the financial troubles of Greece and the unprecedented migration pressure yet again require the European countries to turn to their identity and to what connects them.
“Today we will unite ideas about how we can speed up the cohesion. No matter what forms there are, we all realise that the only weapon we have to avoid war in Europe is the integration,” the Bulgarian Head of State remarked.
Mr Plevneliev warned that if the EU member states turned incapable of overcoming the crises as a unity, they would face the risk of isolation and instability.
“Isolation should remain the XX century, which will be the era of walls, tension and conflicts between the separate countries and their selfish interests,” President Rosen Plevneliev commented further.
Mr Plevneliev yet again called for higher engagement of the European countries towards the education as the most efficient means for providing high-quality life for the next generation.
“I hope we realise that the future lies on the human talent and innovations. The human development is an obligatory precondition for economic development, too,” the Bulgarian President remarked.
