“We are ready to handle it but the problem is much more acute. These are many millions of migrants. I also have a letter from Turkey’s Prime Minister as we have worked a lot together in the past days and they already find it hard to handle the millions of refugees on their territory. On the other hand, the weather conditions are deteriorating and these people cannot go back to Syria and other countries,” said Bulgarian Prime Minister Boyko Borisov, speaking in Brussels.

In his words, pressure on the border will be enormous. “Over 10 million migrants are expected to enter Bulgaria,” he announced.

“We discussed with the Turkish Prime Minister the possibility of creating a security zone in Syria, where people will be close to their hometowns and will have the help they need there. Of course, the conflict has to be settled in the shortest possible time,” Borisov stressed.

“Both external borders are Greece and Bulgaria. The Turks are making great efforts and are behaving in an exceptionally humane and Europe manner. They have already spent many billions of dollars on refugees. However, they cannot keep them anymore. The more tightly we keep borders closed, the more pressure on them rises,” the Bulgarian official noted.

He specified an important solution was sought.

“The Turkish Prime Minister is organising an event on October 14-15 in Istanbul and I will find a way to go [there], most probably on the day before the European Council sitting. I do not believe fines will be imposed for we spend so much money and resources [on] fences, the armed forces, and border police; we are dispatching police officers from all over the country [to the border],” Boyko Borisov assured.

According to him, lots of refugees do not meet the conditions they desire to have yet thousands of Bulgarian citizens live in conditions that are not better.

“We have hundreds of thousands of Roma people we take care of and billons from our social funds are spent each year to keep them on the territory of Bulgaria,” Borisov added.
