Bulgaria President: Bulgarian legislation guarantees equal rights to women and men

“Process of election of a UN Secretary General should be transparent and guarantee fair and equal allocation based on gender and geographic balance.”

This is what President of the Republic of Bulgaria Rosen Plevneliev said in his statement in the frames of the Global Leaders’ Meeting on Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment: A Commitment to Action, co-hosted by the People’s Republic of China and the UN Women in New York, the press centre of the Bulgarian President’s Office announced.

The Bulgarian Head of State remarked that it was up to us to strengthen the trust placed in the UN as an universal organisation and to face the numerous challenges of the future together by joining the women in the decision making process.

In his statement Mr Plevneliev stressed that the constant efforts made on behalf of Bulgaria in support of the rights of the women and girls led to more active participation of the Bulgarian women in the political and social life and in the process of working out the leader’s positions in prestigious directions.

“Two-thirds of the magistrates in the national courts in Bulgaria are women, as well as 65% of the state employees, 43% of the members of the management boards of state-run companies, more than 30% of the municipal councillors,” Mr Plevneliev explained.

“The Bulgarian legislation guarantees equal rights to women and men and equal participation in all fields of life,” Rosen Plevneliev said and added that the gender discrimination was banned under the law.
