Bulgarian Court Upholds Regulator’s Decision to Fine Uber

Bulgaria’s Supreme Administrative Court on Monday upheld a decision of the country’s anti-trust watchdog to fine two Dutch-registered online taxi-service providers a total of BGN 200,000 over unfair competition, Darik radio station reported.

The companies concerned are Uber BV and Rasier Operations BV.

Each of them was fined BGN 100,000 for breaching competition rules, refusal to pay the license fees required from a company that offers transport services to passengers, and failure to cooperate with Bulgarian authorities by providing information requested by the Commission for Protection of Competition (CPC).

The two companies appealed the the CRC decision to fine them, saying they were not taxi companies proper but only acted as intermediaries between passengers and car drivers via an online application.

There are no reasons why the two companies fined by CRC will be unable to make the investments they have planned in Bulgaria in compliance with national legislation, according to the Supreme Administrative Court.
