EC organises public consultations on Romania-Bulgaria-Greece territorial cooperation

Programmes of European Union’s European Territorial Cooperation, better known as Interreg, turn 25 years in 2015. Over these years the programmes helped for the realisation of EU’s cohesion policy through support for many projects in the fields of territorial cooperation, urban development, transport, cross-border infrastructure, IT, environment, energy, education, entrepreneurship, culture, social policy, healthcare, scientific researches and studies, human resources.

More than EUR 10 billion will be invested in 2014-2020 in 100 programmes for cooperation between the regions, around EUR 6.6 billion of which will go for the cross-border regions.

“Despite the successes and the progress of Interreg over the past 25 years, it is clear to the citizens in the border regions and the observers that there are still many obstacles, mostly administrative and legal,” said European Commissioner for Regional Policy Corina Cretu.

She decided to launch a review on the standing obstacles in the border regions and part of this review will be organised as a public discussion aiming to collect opinions from citizens, companies and others, over the obstacles faced during the everyday cooperation through the border.

In her words, an important part of the review is an online public consultation, which will be open for all European citizens for three months.

“I want to hear about the difficulties they are facing and their proposals for overcoming them,” Ms Cretu remarked.

The public consultation continues from September 21 until December 21. The results will be published online. The final report with recommendations on how the countries and the regions in the EU can tackle the obstacles will be ready by the beginning of 2017.

To support the initiative and encourage citizens’ participation in the consultations on the cooperation between Bulgaria and Romania, Charlina Vicheva, Director at the EC Directorate General for Regional Policy, will visit the districts of Ruse and Giurgiu on October 2, 2015, the press office of the European Commission Representation in Bulgaria announced.

Ms Vicheva will examine two projects financed under the OP Romania-Bulgaria Cross-Border Cooperation 2007-2013.

A press conference will take place at the head office of the JAMEA project in Giurgiu.
