Finance Minister Vladislav Goranov: Defence budget will be increased

We have assumed commitments to NATO that we must follow through and the defence budget will be increased, said Minister of Finance Vladislav Goranov. It is not certain we will be able to achieve what our partners want, but that will be the general direction, said Minister Goranov and added that the budget is yet to be put to discussion. Vladislav Goranov indicated that the sum of EUR 500 million needed for brand new fighters is too steep and the government must discuss the matter in great detail. It is unlikely that we shall be able to provide such a resource next year, you know what state the treasury is in, Minister Goranov noted. If we were to ask people whether certain social problems need to be addressed, or whether we should buy fighter jets, I wouldn’t know what the right answer is. Furthermore, we are at a very advanced stage in negotiating an agreement on the overhaul of the aircraft we now have, Finance Minister Vladislav Goranov said.
