Govt doesn’t defend Bulgaria’s interests enough, accepting new refugee quota over next 2 years: MEP

“Bulgarian legislation is to be synchronised with European law over the topic of refugees,” said MEP Iliyana Yotova, head of the delegation of Bulgarian socialists at the European Parliament (EP) and Vice-Chair of the Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs at the EP, speaking Saturday at a seminar themed “Refugee crisis – is there a risk for the ethnic-cultural model in Europe?".

The event was held in the village of Momchilovtsi, district of Smolyan.

According to Yotova, the European Commission took actions against Bulgaria over non-communication of transposition of the respective EU legislation, mostly the Asylum Procedures Directive, which is at the basis of solving big part of problems faced daily over the topic of refugees.

“My colleagues will work on that in the coming months,” Ms Yotova noted.

She opined the Bulgarian government did not defend the country’s interests enough, accepting the fact of a new refugee quota over the next two years.

“As rapporteur on these topics and as Vice-Chair of the Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs, I have always insisted in future policies, in order to successfully handle the refugee issue, Europe should at last have common border protection,” Iliyana Yotova commented.

She commented the EP and the Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs would next week start work on the so-called Permanent Relocation Mechanism, which was a very serious and very risky policy over which there would be lots of differences of opinion.

The European lawmaker remarked further Bulgarian people seemed to have believed from 2012 to 2015 refugees were in the country for a short time and would not stay in it due to the sustainable European policy that had been conducted since May, when the European Commission (EC) had proposed measures for the first time, and due to objective circumstances.

Yotova added Bulgarians should get used to the thought considerable part of the refugees in the country at present would stay in it.

According to Iliyana Yotova, Bulgaria the consequences of events worldwide and in Europe will have an impact on Bulgaria.

“Our government obviously does not grasp the seriousness of the problem and continues to wait for a decision of the western leaders but our interests differ,” the EU legislator opined.

In her view, the Dublin Regulation should also be amended or otherwise Bulgaria risks turning into a buffer zone, where refugees gather.

“I am not talking about those 800 to 900 people we have to accept over the next two years. The matter is whether these people want to return and live in our country. We should develop also in the near future a model according to which these people will be politically represented,” Iliyana Yotova stated.
