More than 100,000 people visited the Sand Sculptures Festival in the Bulgarian coastal city of Burgas this summer.

Dimitar Madzharov, Director of Summer theatre, festivals and concerts department with Burgas Municipality, announced the information speaking for Radio FOCUS.

“Visitors with paid entrance were 72,500, while 33,000 were kids aged up to 7, who enter free of charge. I am happy that so many kids visited the festival.

This year we made more interesting presentation of the sculptures. There was a jungle and we provided the proper sounds so as to make people feel as if they are on a real safari,” Mr Madzharov explained.

He also recalled that there was a summer school at which children were taught to make sand sculptures themselves.

“This is a type of sand art, which incites different emotion among the guests and the citizens of Burgas.

I am happy that Burgas is one of the few cities with such international history. We have welcomed here many world famous sculptors working with sand,” Dimitar Madzharov added.

Thanks to the good weather conditions the festival will continue until October 15.

“The sculptures are in perfect state. The good weather is one of the reasons to have them preserved in perfect shape. The rain and the wind affect the sculptures. Anyway, the way the sculptures are made allows their preservation in time. There is certain amount of clay in the sand,” Mr Madzharov explained.

“Everything depends on the sand’s processing, the humidity. After the sculptures are ready, they are covered with a substance that includes a little bit of glue so as to make them resistant to the weather,” he said commenting on the sculpturing process.

Dimitar Madzharov also informed that those, who had missed to see the sculptures, still had a chance to do it from 9:30 a.m. until 7:30 p.m. every day until October 15.
