Bulgaria’s Schengen accession – matter of overall EU security now, interior minister says

Bulgaria and Romania’s Schengen accession is now an issue, related to the security of the entire EU, Interior Minister Rumiana Bachvarova said in Brussels during the first session of the EU Council of Interior Ministers. In her speech Minister Bachvarova clarified that the management of the external borders was directly connected with the most recent challenges, faced by the EU due to migration processes. This requires a coordinated, joint and collective response from all member-states. According to Minister Bachvarova, the frontline members are the most affected ones, including Bulgaria, as those cover the security of the union’s external borders. That is why solidarity will have to be shown to these states particularly, the minister further said.
