Crimes related to electoral process could be divided into 3 groups: Bulgaria’s Prosecutor General

“Crimes related to the electoral process could be divided into three groups at present,” said Bulgaria’s Prosecutor General Sotir Tsatsarov, speaking with journalists at parliament on Friday.

“We work with individuals, not parties,” he stated.

In his words, individuals detained over involvement in vote buying worked in favour of a certain party.

“One of the [above-mentioned] groups are purely typological crimes against the political rights of citizens. I mean vote buying and selling in its purest form,” the Prosecutor General commented further.

In his view, the second group includes crimes related to or having political motives. Tsatsarov pointed to a crime committed in the village of Yoakim Gruevo, municipality of Isperih, where the crime was hooliganism and causing bodily harm to an official. An argument about a political party was the main reason behind the accident.

“The third category of crimes were committed by individuals that are somehow related to the subject. The case in Pleven is similar – an individual registered as a municipal councillor nominee was involved in hooliganism in the concrete case, which was related to alcohol consumption and an argument over belonging to a certain football club. The result is a request for stripping [him] of immunity,” Sotir Tsatsarov noted.
