28 million tons of gold under our feet

Some 22 permits for exploration of oil and gas were issued or are in process of being issued in Bulgaria, Standart reports.

Some 18 concessions for oil and natural gas production were awarded – four of them are located in the continental shelf. There are about 43 coal deposits on Bulgarian territory.

The biggest ones are brown coals – about 1.843 billion tons and an annual production of 29.127 million tons. Independent of their low quality, they are the main source of electricity generation in Bulgaria.

More than 50% of the electricity generated in the country is generated by Bulgarian coal-fed TPPs. The main reserves and production of brown coal are located in Maritza Iztok.
