Minister Vasileva: Bulgaria did a lot with money from Environment OP

Bulgaria fulfilled a series of projects with money from the Environment Operational Programme, although it was suspended for a long time, Bulgaria’s Minister of Environment and Water Ivelina Vasileva said. 98% of the money under that EU programme, or a total of EUR 1.6 billion was already absorbed. Bulgaria managed to build and rehabilitate with this money 40 water treatment plants and 9 waste treatments systems. A series of projects aimed at building eco pathways were also completed under that programme, Minister Vasileva further pointed out. The Environment OP also grants money for the purchase of environmentally-friendly vehicles for the public transport. EUR 100 million are used by the authorities to combat floods and fires in Bulgaria. In her words, in the new programming period Bulgaria will use some of the money under this programme to finance the national water-management system and manage the risk of landslides. The authorities are also planning to establish 6 regional centers that will deal with the calamities on Bulgarian territory to the tune of EUR 20 million. EUR 60 million will be granted to the Bulgarian municipalities to reduce the fine dust particples in the air, Minister Vasileva also said.
