“Regulations over the production and consumption of GMO products production need to be introduced,” said dietary specialist Professor Donka Baykova, speaking for Radio FOCUS – Plovdiv on Sunday.

In her words, biotechnologies have started to be introduced in the production of various foods on a rapid basis in the past years.

“The reason is clear – the population on the Earth is growing, food resources are becoming scarce, and ways are sought of compensating for that. Modern biotechnologies offer the production of plant products that have different indicators in terms of ingredients, have higher protein and vitamin contents, and are more resistant to pests and drought,” Professor Baykova noted.

According to her, skepticism in developed countries, including Bulgaria, is very high because of possible risks to human health.

In the first place, these are allergies that are more and more frequently met in large part of the population, especially in the so-called risk groups, Baykova stated.
