Death of Afghan citizen had greater resonance in Bulgaria than in Europe: expert

“Two are two factors for the increasing number of Afghani nationals that join the main migration flow heading towards Europe through the Bulgarian territory,” said Professor Vladimir Chukov, expert in Arabic sciences, speaking for FOCUS News Agency.

Chukov noted these were the instable way of governing the country and the continuing terror on the part of the Taliban and, on the other hand, Iran’s pressure to resettle the million and a half Afghan people that have been living there since 1979.

Vladimir Chukov stated a clear distinction should be made between political refugees and economic migrants.

“Refugees are people fleeing a war. These individuals have to be helped by the countries than inked the convention on refugees passed by the UN,” the specialist remarked.

Chukov explained there were in the meantime people not having the right to such protection. An Afghan migrant who illegally entered Bulgaria died last week after a bullet hit him.

It is believed the incident occurred after a border police officer from the town of Sredets fired a warning shot into the air and a rebound bullet hit the man.

Referring to the case, Vladimir Chukov noted the death of the Afghan citizen had greater resonance in Bulgaria than in Europe.
