People with access to power should declare property ownership: Bulgaria Deputy PM

Meglena Kuneva, Bulgarian Deputy Prime Minister for European Policies Coordination and Institutional Affairs, participated Monday in a public debate on tackling corruption at a European and national level.

The discussion was themed “Institutions against corruption. The good practices of OLAF”. OLAF Director-General Giovanni Kessler participated in the event, too, as a guest lecturer.

“People who have access to power should declare their property ownership,” said Ms Kuneva, speaking with journalists after the event.

“Mentioning the countries with the highest corruption levels in public to make them ashamed is not accepted. This is a job of the national authorities and when I was a [European] commissioner I compiled a positive list,” Kuneva commented.

“Seeing in what a resolute manner high-level corruption is tackled in countries such as Portugal, Spain, France, Romania, [and] Slovenia, I think each country does its best so that its citizens could feel they live in a fair environment,” the official noted.

Asked what amendments would be made to the texts of the anti-corruption bill, Ms Kuneva replied when the document was ready, she would present it.

“Giovanni Kessler’s advice on how to protect anonymous signals will be carefully studied by the working group,” the Deputy Prime Minister said further.

“We should also be aware that people with access to power should declare their property ownership,” the official was explicit.

In her view, it should be also clear whether a person works in the favour of the society or in favour of a private entity.
