Higher taxes on junk food and fizzy drinks

 Four types of unhealthy foods and beverages will be a subject to higher taxes, Bulgarian Minister of Healthcare Petar Moskov and Minister of Sports Krassen Kralev have announced. The prices of products with added sugar, or those containing lots of salt, vegetable oils and caffeine, will rise because of the new tax. Various types of foods and beverages that have been proven to have harmful effects on health will be subjected to an indirect tax, Minister Moskov explained. The price of imitation dairy products is expected to rise by some 80 percent. Prices of fizzy drinks will be 31 percent higher. Expected revenues to the state would be about 75 million euro per year that will be spent for building sport facilities, for improving nutrition in schools and for preventive healthcare.
