Bulgarians vote in local elections, referendum

  Polling stations opened at 6:00 a.m. in Bulgaria on Sunday, October 25.
About 6,363,000 people have the right to vote at the local elections and referendum on electronic voting the country is holding.
Voting will take place at 12,314 polling stations in Bulgaria and 294 polling stations abroad.
There will be machine voting in 50 polling stations in the capital Sofia but people be able to vote only for municipal councillors in the said manner.
The total number of the registered mayor candidates is 42,702, while municipal councillor nominees are 35,770.
Voters will use pens that have inks in blue and put either the sign of “X” or “V” on the ballots when voting.
When electing municipal councillors, people can mark the so-called preferences – they first can mark the number of the party they back and then their preferred nominee.
Polling stations abroad where people will vote at the referendum on e-voting were opened on the basis of voter turnout in past years.
Over 13,000 employees of the Ministry of Interior will be in charge of monitoring activities on the election day.
A telephone line has been launched in the country and signals over electoral violations can be submitted.
Polling stations in Bulgaria are expected to close at 7:00 p.m. but the time for voting could be extended by 1 hour.
According to the Central Electoral Commission (CEC), 8 sociological agencies will conduct exit polls.
27 organisations submitted applications to become observers at the elections and 14 were registered.
