A total of 12,314 polling stations across the country opened at 6:00 a.m. local time (0400 GMT). A total of 6,363,238 eligible voters were to vote for mayors and municipal councilors from 42,702 candidates.
In addition, 523 nationals of European Union countries have declared that they wanted to vote in the elections, held every four years, Bulgaria's Central Election Commission has said.
Bulgaria holding local elections, referendum Sunday: Bulgaria is holding on Sunday, October 25, local elections and a referendum on granting citizens the right to vote electronically at elections and referendums, Ukrinform reports.
Over 80 political parties and public and political movements and 3 coalitions are participating in the elections.
Besides the local elections at which local authorities representatives will be elected, Bulgarian citizens are voting at a referendum at which they will answer the question of whether they support the idea of being able to vote from a distance, electronically, at elections and referendums.
Bulgaria, Romania, Serbia can close borders for refugees: Bulgarian Prime Minister Boyko Borisov has warned his country, Romania, and Serbia could close their borders if Germany or other European counties decided to implement such a measure in an attempt to halt migrant flows, Prensa Latina reported.
After meeting with his partners in the capital Sofia, Borisov remarked the Balkans region would not turn into “a zone of shock integration” due to the current migrant crisis.
He also voiced the countries’ refusal to be exposed to the “pressure of millions of workers without documents” that are expected to arrive on their territory.
In the past months, Europe has been faced with the biggest migration crisis after the Second World War and despite a number of meetings and discussions the 28 EU member states have not managed to find an efficient solution to the problem.
