AES will develop a 20 MW Battery Energy Storage project in Jordan

AES Corporation and National Electric Company (NEPCO) of Jordan signed today a Memorandum of Understanding for the development and implementation of a 20 MW Batery Energy Storage System in the country.  Jordan is pioneering  in the deployment  of this innovative technology in the Middle East. This project when in operations will contribute to reduce the cost of integrating renewable energy into the grid allowing Jordan an efficient use of its solar and wind resources. The system is planned to be located  in Al Manakhar in Amman East region and designed with a capacity of 20 MW energy storage, equivalent to 40 MW of flexible resource.  The project will take a year to start operations from its final approval.

The Memorandum of Understanding was signed by the AES Europe President Mr. Julian Nebreda and the Vice-President and Market Business Leader for Jordan Mr. Meftaur Rahman, both in representation of the AES Corporation, and the NEPCO CEO Eng. Abdul Fattah Al Dardadkah. The Energy Minister of Jordan  Dr. Ibrahim Saif and the Ambassador of the United States of America Mrs. Alice Wells attended the signing ceremony.

AES Battery Energy Storage Solution (AES Advancion) is built with battery technology from best-in-class suppliers and incorporates AES’ eight years of commercial experience operating this systems in several markets.  AES Advancion has a proven track record with excelent availability standards and a scalable design that offers the ability to grow with a need of the power markets.

AES currently has 86 MW of battery-based energy storage, which is equivalent to 172 MW of flexible resource in commercial operation in the United States and Chile.  Two new battery projects will start operations by the end of the year in the United Kingdom and the Netherlands. Each of them providing  10 MW of capacity, equivalent to 20 MW of flexible resource. Additionally, AES is constructing four new projecst – two in the United States, one in Chile and one in Philippines - and has  four more in the late stage of development – in the United States, Dominican Republic and United Kingdom. The facilities in construction and late stage development will provide 298 MW of energy storage, equivalent to 596 MW flexible resource.

AES Corporation initiated investing in the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan in 2007 with the construction of the Amman East Power Plant in Al Manakher. The overall investment in this project, in operations from 2009, represents more than 300 million U.S. Dollars. The corporation continued expanding its presence in 2012 with IPP4 project, completed in 2014 and with total investments of around 360 million U.S. Dollars. At the moment both projects serve about 20% of the country’s power demand and create job opportunities for more than 250 highly qualified Jordanian.
