Interior Minister: MP immunity should be restricted

The right of MPs to freely speak out and express their position should be guaranteed, but all other rights place MPs in a privileged position, said Minister of the Interior Rumyana Bachvarova. She is of the opinion that there should be no special protection over MPs for their behavior in public. At the beginning of the week GERB party announced that it starts consultations for a new amendment to the Constitution, suggesting the dropping of article 70, which regulates MPs’ immunity for retention on indictable offences. GERB’s intention is to preserve the protection of members of Parliament related to their possibility not to bear charges for the opinions and stands they voice in Parliament or for the way they vote there.
