Fifteen Bulgarian Villages Likely to Elect Mayors at Third Round

Fifteen Bulgarian villages are likely to elect their mayors at third round as winners emerged neither at the first round of the local elections held on October 25 nor in the run-offs taking place on November 1.

According to the latest figures of the Central Election Commission (CIK), fifteen villages have not elected mayors in the second round as the candidates garnered equal number of votes in the run-off.

Among the villages are Mednikarovo and Kozarevets in the region of Stara Zagora and the village of Sofronievo in the region of Montana.

In Mednikarovo, both the candidate of the Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP) and the Bulgarian Communist Party garnered 50 % of the votes cast.

The situation was the same in Kozarevets, where the run-off pitted against each other the candidates of the largest ruling party GERB and the largest opposition party BSP.

The exact number of villages to hold third round will be confirmed once the processing of the ballot papers is fully completed.

In case no mayor was elected in the run-off, CIK has to inform the president within a period of two weeks.

Then the president has two weeks to issue a decree on the holding of a third round.
