Deputy PM: 2015 Local Elections Were Most Expensive in Bulgarian History
Deputy Prime Minister Tomislav Donchev, who was in charge of coordinating the elections, said that this year's local elections were the most expensive ones in the history of Bulgaria.
In an interview for the Bulgarian National Radio (BNR) on Monday, Donchev stated that the cost of the elections came close to BGN 50 M. According to him, there were were concrete reasons behind the hack attacks targeting the websites of key institutions responsible for the elections. As regards the chaos with the processing of the ballot papers at the Arena Armeec hall in Sofia experienced after the first round, these problems were partly due to the Election Code, which obligates the holding of elections in small settlements and district mayors in the three largest cities – Sofia, Plovdiv and Varna.
Donchev called on MPs to consider amendments to the Election Code as soon as possible, recommending them to adopt adequate measures, which will ensure that the whole system functions as one. One of his recommendations is for the election process to have a clear leader outside the executive power. In his words, the election results of the main parties, reaffirm the stability of the ruling coalition.
Donchev added that the option for preferential voting should not be removed due to the incompetence of elections officials in the processing of the ballot papers.
