3 500 children migrants seek refuge in Bulgaria

At a round table in Sofia, dedicated to the problems of unaccompanied children, seeking asylum until end September, information was voiced about nearly 3 500 migrant children. More than 1 100 children coming mainly from Afghanistan, Iraq and Syria, are with no parent or other escort. Most of them arrive without speaking any foreign language, with no ID papers and healthcare status. In Turkey there are over 600 000 migrant children. Even though in Bulgaria their number is much smaller, this country is facing the same problems, the round table convened. Unescorted children should be a subject of special attention, according to Vice President Margarita Popova. Although the legislation on the child’s rights protection is good in Bulgaria, many questions and challenges still require their proper answer, Popova went on to say.
