At least 153 people were killed in the Paris and Saint-Denis shootings and bombings, French officials said, cited by CNN. Among the victims, 112 were killed at the Bataclan concert venue, according to the Interior Ministry.
Saint-Denis is home to the national stadium where the match was being played.
On a night when thousands of Paris residents and tourists were reveling and fans were enjoying a soccer match between France and world champion Germany, horror struck in an unprecedented manner. Terrorists - some with AK-47s, some reportedly with bombs strapped to them - attacked sites throughout the French capital and at the stadium where the soccer match was underway. Scores were killed in the coordinated attacks late Friday, leaving a nation in mourning and the world in shock.
Five suspected attackers have been "neutralized", the Paris prosecutor's office said Saturday, French media reported. It was unclear what that term precisely meant. Michael Dorio, brother of a member of the band that was playing at the Bataclan concert venue said he spoke to his brother, Eagles of Death Metal drummer Julian Doris, on the phone 20-30 minutes after the attack. "He said he had been performing and heard the gunshots. They stopped playing and hit the deck and went backstage and exited," Michael Dorio told CNN. CNN affiliate BFMTV reports that SWAT units stormed the Bataclan concert hall and that the siege was over. Two attackers were killed, a police union said. Police brought out at least 100 hostages from the concert hall, a CNN producer said; some appear to be wounded.
President Francois Hollande told reporters outside Bataclan that "terrorists capable of carrying out such atrocities must know that they will face a France that is determined and united."
France has deployed an additional 1,500 soldiers to Paris in the wake of attacks on Friday, the presidency said cited by AFP. "A council of defence has been convened for Saturday at 9:00 am (0800 GMT). Already, 1,500 additional soldiers have been mobilised," said the Elysee Palace in a statement.
A total of eight militants were killed, including seven by their suicide belts, a source close to the investigation said, according to AFP. Four of the attackers were killed in the Bataclan concert hall, three by activating their suicide vests and one shot by police. Three more died near the national stadium and a fourth was killed in a street in eastern Paris.
World reacts in shock, solidarity after Paris attacks
World leaders responded with shock and pledges of solidarity for France following the killing of over 140 people in attacks in Paris on Friday night, though there was little action any could immediately take, Reuters reports.
Divided on many issues, including on the war in Syria that has fueled Islamist violence, the United States and Russia both voiced their support in messages to French President Francois Hollande.
U.S. President Barack Obama lead the chorus of world outrage over the attacks, AFP rounds up. "Once again we've seen an outrageous attempt to terrorize innocent civilians," Obama. "We stand prepared and ready to provide whatever assistance that the government and the people of France need." "Those who think that they can terrorize the people of France or the values that they stand for are wrong," he added.
Russian President Vladimir Putin sent his deep condolences to Hollande and all the people of France following the "horrible terrorist attacks in Paris", the Kremlin said in a statement. "Russia strongly condemns this inhumane killing and is ready to provide any and all assistance to investigate these terrorist crimes."
The UN Security Council issued a statement condemning "barbaric and cowardly terrorist attacks" involving assailants using guns and bombs on several venues, including the national sports stadium and a major music venue. The Western defense alliance NATO said it stood with France, a founder member. Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg said, "I am deeply shocked by the horrific terrorist attacks across Paris tonight. My thoughts are with the families of the victims, with all those affected, and with the people of France. "We stand strong and united in the fight against terrorism. Terrorism will never defeat democracy."
In Europe, German Chancellor Angela Merkel, whose foreign minister was attending a France-Germany soccer match with Hollande when the stadium was attacked, said, "I am deeply shaken by the news and pictures that are reaching us from Paris. The German government is in contact with the French government and has passed on a message of sympathy and solidarity from the German people." British PM David Cameron said, "I am shocked by events in Paris tonight. Our thoughts and prayers are with the French people. We will do whatever we can to help."
In Brussels the leaders of European Union institutions, which have been trying to coordinate security responses since the Islamist attacks in Paris in January, joined the chorus. "I am confident the authorities and the French people will overcome this new trial," European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker said. European Council President Donald Tusk said he was following events "with horror".
U.S. security officials believe the attacks were coordinated
U.S. security officials believe the series of attacks that shook Paris on Friday night were likely coordinated based on initial reports, a person familiar with developing intelligence assessments said for Reuters. "This clearly looks like a coordinated series of attacks," the person said.
Meanwhile, United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon condemned the attacks in Paris on Friday that killed at least 39 people and called for any hostages to be immediately released, AFP reports.
"The secretary-general condemns the despicable terrorist attacks carried out today in various locations in and around Paris," according to a statement from his spokesman. "The secretary-general extends his deepest condolences to the families of the victims and wishes a speedy recovery to those injured. He stands with the government and people of France."
