European Commission criticizes Bulgaria’s power engineering

The European Commission strongly criticized Bulgaria’s power engineering sector in its first annual report about the state of the so-called Energy Union. Bulgaria remains vulnerable to possible interruptions of gas supplies, the document reads. The import of gas and nuclear fuel depend fully on Russia and Bulgaria has limited alternatives to store liquid gas, the document further reads. The construction of key infrastructure projects which would modernize the gas transferring networks and enhance the gas interconnections with neighboring countries such as Greece, Romania, Serbia and Turkey is delayed due to regulatory and financial difficulties, the EC notes. It also accentuated on other shortcomings in the country’s power engineering such as the expansion of renewable power plants which use generous subsidies to sell wind and solar electricity, the long-term contracts with power plants at fixed prices and the politically dependent energy regulator.
