Minister Daniel Mitov: EU must give serious attention to external border control

There can be no question of Bulgaria’s military involvement in an operation against the Islamic State, said Bulgarian Foreign Minister Daniel Mitov for the Bulgarian National Radio, adding that Bulgaria will assist France to the best of its abilities.

“Talking about France and Article 42.7 of the Lisbon Treaty, it is automatic, but at the same time it goes both ways, i.e. if France asks for aid – it may not be military, it may be aid of any kind – Bulgaria will help, but to the best of its abilities,” Minister Mitov said. “Even helping with information is a serious contribution, to my mind; there can be no question of Bulgaria’s military involvement because we have received no such request and there is no way this can happen. Our solidarity with France continues and we are ready to help to the best of our abilities.”

Minister Mitov added that Bulgaria will live up to its commitments to the EU, but that talking of refugee quotas is just not serious and cannot resolve the problem:

“The EU must give very serious attention to control of its external borders. Our neighbours, who have borders of a completely different kind must be helped in their efforts to guard and control their borders well. Second: Europe must clearly state what its capacity is because we cannot have people entering the EU with no control, but also because our social and education system, and all other systems cannot absorb such numbers.

There are refugees who have entered Europe whom we owe solidarity and compassion, but there are also many economic migrants, a difference must be made, and not just on paper but in practical terms and the process of repatriating people must begin, they must go back where they came from. Only then can it be said there is any control of the situation.

If we want the ISIS-controlled territories to pass over to a legitimate government, there will have to be a ground operation, but it must involve the countries of the region,” said Bulgarian Foreign Minister Daniel Mitov, adding that for the time being Bulgaria is coping with its border control and that the Syrian crisis is a principal source of instability in the region and in Europe.
