EUROSTAT gives data on Bulgarian farming

An analysis issued by EUROSTAT shows that in 2013 nearly 37% of farmers in Bulgaria were over 65 years old. Thos in the 55-64 age group were 25%, those aged 45-54 were 18% and those aged 35-44 – only 13%. Only 6% of Bulgarian farmers were below 35. In a period of 10 years the number of farms has considerably decreased. In 2013 there were 250 thousand farms, which is about 62% less on 2003. On the other hand, in the same period this country has considerably increased the area of arable land, achieving an growth of 60% on the backdrop of 0.1% increase of arable land on average in the rest of the EU.
