HIV positive in Bulgaria total 2247

The newly registered HIV-positive individuals in Bulgaria since the beginning of the year have been 204, said Tonka Varleva, Director of Prevention & Control of HIV/AIDS Program. In this way the sum total of known cases nationally has totaled 2247. One notable and persistent trend is that the number of newly registered HIV-positive men is five times the number of women. With close to 90% of new cases infection was sexually transmitted and the rest got HIV from injection use of narcotic drugs. In latest statistics, close to 54% of newly registered HIV-positive individuals are aged from 30 to 49, and 35% are young people aged from 20 to 29. Most infections have occurred in big cities – Sofia, Plovdiv, Varna and Burgas.
