EC urges Sofia to verify corruption signals
In a letter to Bulgaria’s Minister of Justice Hristo Ivanov Vice-President of the European Commission Frans Timmermans reminded that one of the criteria about the progress of Bulgaria in the Mechanism for Cooperation and Verification regards the country’s capacity to investigate high-level corruption and trading in influence. The letter was sent on occasion of the wiretapping scandal about a conversation between a former head of the Sofia City Court and a former magistrate, where the names of Premier Boyko Borissov, the Chief Prosecutor Sotir Tsatsarov, the Chairman of the Supreme Administrative Court Georgi Kolev and members of the Supreme Judicial Council are mentioned. Last week the EC called on Bulgaria to make an unbiased investigation of the facts and now it reminds that all signals about trade in influence and corruption must be verified.
