Bulgaria marks Saint Nicholas’ Day

Bulgaria marks Saint Nicholas’ Day [in Bulgarian: Nikulden] on December 6.

According to the Christian people’s myth about the division of the world, Saint Nicholas was given the seas, the rivers and the lakes. He is the master of the entire water world – of fish and of water demons, as well as of sea winds.
According to myths, St Nicholas shakes and restrains sea winds, walks over the sea and rescues ships in danger.
The saint is the guardian of sailors and fishermen.

Nikulden is also the professional day of bankers in Bulgaria. On Saint Nicholas’ Day people have to offer a sacrifice, most often a carp.

In Bulgaria, Saint Nicholas is one of the most celebrated saints. Many churches and monasteries are named after him.
Many Bulgarians celebrate a name day today. These are people named: Nikol, Nikola, Nikolay, Nikolina, Nikolinka, Nikoleta, Nenka, Nina, Ninka, Kolyo, Niko, Nitsa.
