PM Borisov: Cameron's Visit Is Recognition of Bulgarian Efforts
According to Prime Minister Boyko Borisov, the recent two-day visit of his British counterpart David Cameron to Bulgaria is a recognition of the efforts of the government, the parties supporting the ruling coalition and the opposition. Borisov pointed that Cameron had left the country on Friday with good impressions and thanked him that regardless of protocols and security measures he had assumed all risks. In his words, foreign investors and Europe see Bulgaria as a financially disciplined country as its currency is pegged to the euro, it has a fiscal reserve and a currency board. Borisov noted that they have been friends with Cameron for five-six years during which they have been working together. According to him, it was not bad to be praised by such a person as his words are being heard, Borisov said in an interview for the Bulgarian National Television (BNT) on Friday. The prime minister noted that Bulgaria has accepted all values of the Euroatlantic community and is fulfilling its commitments. At the same time, Bulgaria is very careful with both Russia and Turkey, taking into account its key and geographic position, history, cultural and mutual ties with both countries. Thus Bulgaria is not a party to the conflict between Russia and Turkey, which has escalated following the downing of a Russian Su-24 bomber by Turkish F-16 fighter jets on the Turkish-Syrian border on November 24. According to him, Russia has understood that Bulgaria has serious commitments towards NATO and the EU and Moscow is no longer provoking the country. Borisov stated that it was not nice for the international community when the Russian and Turkish presidents are hurling mutual accusations at each other. In his words, Bulgaria is well-positioned due to its straightforward, flexible and well-intentioned policy. Bulgaria has a good chance of completing the gas hub, which will ensure diversification of the country's supplies. He reminded that the Bulgarian and Greek energy ministers will sign the agreement on the natural gas interconnector between the two countries in the coming days. Borisov also revealed that he had a telephone conversation with his Turkish counterpart Ahmet Davutoglu on Friday. He shared that Davutoglu will visit Bulgaria on December 15 prior to the European Council in order to discuss the mutual guarding of the border and the commitments taken by Ankara at the EU-Turkey summit last week.
