Co-chair of Bulgaria’s MRF touches upon burning issues

Rushen Riza, Co-chairperson of the Movement for Rights and Freedoms (MRF), spoke Sunday for Nova TV and commented on main issues.
“There is no attack on our part against [Lyutvi] Mestan and his people,” Mr Riza said.
Former MRF chairperson Lyutvi Mestan was expelled from the formation and dismissed from all the posts he held within it at the end of last December.
Rushen Riza also commented on certain words of Mestan, saying he [Mestan] was a “master of words”.
“He can play with them the way it pleases him. They are only words for me. Until two months ago, we said exactly the opposite about the MRF’s idea and cause,” Riza stated.
“We have not said anything about Mestan yet. He himself chose his path. Let us see in his deeds what he will do,” the politician added.
Rushen Riza was explicit there was no direct attack against Mestan and “his people” on the part of the MRF.
“We are waiting to see his messages and what he intends to do and who he intends to do it with. We live in a free country and insinuations can be made. We are very careful in our statements. We attempt not to respond to provocations. Still, we should give some response to all these accusations of Mestan and [his] people against us. The attack against Mestan is a media attack, an opinion of journalists,” Rushen Riza remarked.
“I remember when the MRF was launched at the dawn of democracy, on February 4, 1990, and we had quite pure ideas, [we wanted] to restore our names and restore free speaking [in our] mother tongue. Then Mestan belonged to the Union of Democratic Forces (UDF) and called the MRF an ethnic party. Afterwards [he spent] 19 years in the MRF and is now establishing a new political party. This should speak enough to our voters,” Rushen Riza remarked.
Lyutvi Mestan launched a new political formation on Saturday.
“I would not say Ankara directly interferes in Bulgaria’s internal affairs,” Rushen Riza went on to say.
According to him, Lyutvi Mestan enjoys support from some organisations of the so-called settlers from Bulgaria in Turkey.
“The organisations of settlers are dependent on Turkey. I would not say Ankara directly interferes in Bulgaria’s internal affairs,” Riza remarked.
He also commented on the first meeting of the MRF former leadership with Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
According to the politician, the tone of the meeting was “well-meaning”.
“[…] This meeting was important to us. I was there in my capacity of deputy chair of the party. It is modern to make lots of insinuations in the media. We wanted such a meeting. I am content we held it. We have wanted to have good relations with Turkey in all these years,” the MRF co-chair noted.
In his view, they have good feelings for Turkey and it is normal they want good relations with the country.
As regards the alleged lists containing the names of MRF members reportedly prohibited from entering Turkey, Riza commented he knew about the list only from things read in the media.
“A colleague of ours travelled to Turkey this week. There were no problems. These could be some insinuations,” the MRF official added.
MRF honorary chairman Ahmed Dogan and MRF lawmaker Delyan Peevski are also said to be part of the lists in question.
