Bulgaria marks Baba Marta Day

Bulgaria marks Baba Marta Day on March 1. The holiday is connected with the traditional Bulgarian Martenitsa - twined tasselled red and white thread, symbol of spring and health.
The Martenitsas are worn as of March 1 and throughout the entire month until a stork or a bloomed tree is seen, symbolising warmer weather, well being and health.
Traditionally the Martenitsa is worn pinned on the clothes but over the past years it became very popular to wear it on one’s wrist as a bracelet.
In the past, the Martenitsa was worn only by the kids, the young women and young brides. The unmarried men used to tie white and red threads on the little finger of their left hand, while the married ones – on the ankle or under their belt.
For the modern Bulgarians, the Martenitsa is a symbol of health and luck.
